Squid Game returns with new characters

The worldwide hit “Squid Game” returns.

Netflix has announced that the dark Korean series has been given the green light for its second season.

Squid Game is a fictional drama where contestants in dire need of money play deadly kid games to compete for a huge, life-changing cash windfall. The series garnered 1.65 billion viewing hours in the first 28 days of its release in 2021.

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series of all time,” said director, screenwriter and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk in a statement released on Monday.

The director said the series’ returning characters include player #456 Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and antagonist Front Man (Lee Byung-hun).

“The man in the suit with ddakji might be back,” he wrote, referring to Gong Yoo, the mysterious man who recruits players at the train station by having them play ddakji.

Finally, he announced that Cheol-su would be introduced in the second season. He will be the “boyfriend” of the infamous animatronic doll from the game show Young-hee.

“Join us once again for a brand new round,” he said.

Squid Game made history as the first Korean and non-English series to be nominated for the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. The show won Outstanding Action Performance as a Stunt Ensemble and was nominated for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Its actors, Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon (player #067 Kang Sae-byeok), won Best Actor awards in gender categories. O Yeong-Su, who played sickly contestant 001 Oh Il-nam on the show, also won Best Supporting Actor at the 2022 Golden Globes.
