Two familiar faces return for the second season of Squid game.
The Saturday, Deadline speak with squid game creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk and actor Park Hae-soo on what fans can expect in Season 2 of the Netflix series.
During the Contenders chat, Dong-hyuk said that Gi-hun, played by actor Lee Jung-jae, and Front Man, played by actor Lee Byung-hun, will both be making a comeback.
“Gi-hun, for sure. He’ll come back, and I think the Front Man will come back too,” Hwang said, later adding of the series, “I hope a work like squid game kind of opened the door. I hope American audiences will give the play a chance and you will read the subtitles and watch without dubbing. We hope to open up this opportunity.”
squid game follows the protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee) and a group of 456 people in debt compete in a series of children’s games to win a $40 million cash prize. But losing matches has deadly consequences for competitors.
The Season 1 cast also included Heo Sung-tae, Jun Young-soo, Kim Joo-ryoung, Oh Young-Soo, Wi Ha-jun, and Anupam Tripathi.
In March, squid game won the Critics Choice Award for Best Foreign Language Series Acapulco, Call my agent!, Lupine, Money theft and Narcos: Mexico.
the Netflix thriller also became the first non-English series and the first Korean series to win Screen Actors Guild Awards in February. Lee also won a SAG Award for best male actor in a drama series.
In January, Netflix announced the season 2 renewal news with co-CEO Ted Sarandos saying, “The squid game the universe has just begun.”
