COLLEGE STATION, Texas – “Playing is learning and in fact, playing is the best way to learn,” said Deborah Horan, owner of play oasis.

This summer isn’t just about having a good time. The play oasis in the university station makes a splash with educational play time.

Aamir Fidai studied at A&M to become an educator now he has one main goal.

“The goals for scholars like me who are actively working in education to make education more accessible to all students,” said Aamir Fidai, teaching A&M’s doctoral program with a focus on STEM.

In order to achieve its goal, Fidai partners with companies such as Play Oasis.

“Even older kids in middle school and high school if they’re having fun while they’re learning, they’re going to learn more and they’re going to be more interested,” said Deborah Horan, owner of Play Oasis.

The play oasis is full of nooks and crannies of sensory play stations ranging from painting to a sandbar, and of course building blocks galore.

“Puzzles are a great problem solving skill, you know we have tons of puzzles here so the learning possibilities are endless,” explained Horan.

According to research conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics play is essential to child development.

“Students are able to take these abstract things and derive concrete knowledge from them using their hands,” Fidai said.

Fidai says he has seen a positive response to sensory focused lessons not only among his students but also other teachers.

“Touching, feeling and using sensory information is the basis of all inventions and innovations,” Fidai added.
