The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) and the City of Brookhaven have approved terms of an agreement to construct a new City Hall on MARTA-owned property adjacent to Brookhaven Railroad Station on the Gold Line in DeKalb County.

Brookhaven is a suburban city of approximately 55,000 located ten miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. The city has rail service (Gold Line) and bus service from the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Administration (MARTA), and the rail line runs parallel to the Norfolk Southern Main Line to Washington, D.C. “MARTA is thrilled to partner with Brookhaven to establish a transit-friendly town hall, one of the few in this country located in a train station. This project will inspire future development around the station, increase ridership and improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity, and makes a powerful statement about the centrality of public transit,” said MARTA’s Interim Managing Director and CEO. , Collie Greenwood.

The 1.24 acre property on Peachtree Road is currently used for long-term parking which will be moved to the east side of the station, and spaces accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) will be moved closer to the station entrance along Peachtree. The ground lease agreement stipulates that Brookhaven will lease the property for nearly $3 million for 50 years before buying it.

“It is the result of a collaboration with MARTA that has lasted for five years,” said [Brookhaven] Mayor John Ernst. “We were all looking for a transit-friendly live-work-play solution that meets the current and future needs of residents and our greater regional community. I look forward to continuing the partnership with MARTA as we create a permanent town hall. »

Brookhaven will oversee the planning, financing and construction of the building. Prior to the start of construction, MARTA will continue to accommodate long-term parking at its current location. A work schedule is currently being drawn up.
