Hold on to your helmet. A one-of-a-kind full-body virtual reality experience called VR sandboxlands at Dallas’ Mockingbird station.
“The Metaverse Immersive Experience” will open Friday, June 24 at 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane, Suite 110, according to a statement. Another DFW location, at Fort Worth’s Crockett Row, is also opening That day.
Each Sandbox site features life-size “Holodecks” equipped with futuristic VR technology that allows up to six people to explore and play together in new worlds. Each player can see and physically interact with everyone inside, but participants feel like they’ve stepped into a game or movie, the creators say.
The release describes the experience as follows: “Together with friends, family or colleagues, players are equipped with a VR headset, haptic vest, backpack and motion sensors at the wrists and ankles Participants can see and interact with their team through VR glasses as they walk together to complete adventures, which include experiences such as defeating zombies in a haunted mansion or participating in a family star trek space mission.”
According to the website, five different VR experiences are offered on the Dallas site, including “Amber Sky 2088”, “Deadwood Mansion”, “Curse of Davy Jones”, “Unbound Fighting League (UFL)”, and “Star Trek Discover: Away Mission”.
Each experience lasts approximately 45 minutes (add an additional 45 minutes for setup, practice, and post-game video viewing). It’s $50 per person, and all games have a two-guest minimum except UFL, which has a four-guest reservation minimum. The website indicates that prices may vary on off-peak days and/or times. Group reservations are available.
Participants must be at least 8 years old and 48 inches or taller to play, and corrective eyewear cannot be worn. (Be sure to check the FAQs for more physical requirements.)
Sandbox VR is a Hong Kong and Silicon Valley-based company founded by CEO Steve Zhao that aimed to create technology that makes participants feel like they’re in a blockbuster action movie. No wonder he’s endorsed by celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Will Smith, the statement said.
“Sandbox VR combines sophisticated real-time motion capture with virtual reality technology to create new media that is the closest thing to star trek holodeck that exists,” they say.
The Dallas and Fort Worth sites are the brand’s second and third in Texas (after Austin) and 14th in the United States. There are also locations in Asia and Canada, and will open soon in Europe.
Mockingbird Station hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to midnight Friday through Saturday.
