8 likable characters who turn out to be the bad guys

Games can be simple, but there can also be a rollercoaster of twists and turns in both gameplay and story. While the focus is always on the character you play as, it’s the supporting characters and actors that bring the experience to life.

While many of them won’t be fully developed, there are those that will work your way through your adventure and find that weak spot to endear you to or even look forward to when they appear. That being said, it can be very hurtful when a character you’ve grown to trust and love stabs you in the back.

8 Atlas

When BioShock came out, it was exciting to see how advanced the graphics had become. The sunken city of Rapture is backed by crisp visuals and amazing water effects. It’s both a desolate and dangerous environment where you need everything you can get your hands on to give yourself a fighting chance.

The worst part is that you are alone for most of the journey, which is why it is so comforting to meet Atlas. Although you mainly interact with him on the radio, his support and advice proves invaluable to your survival. It also helps you find ways to get through Rapture safely and hopefully escape. Which is why it hits hard when those hopes are dashed after Atlas reveals he’s the real bad guy, and you’re just a means to an end.

seven Hakon

Dying Light thrusts you into a city devoured by a deadly virus turning humans into carnivorous monsters and by the time the sequel has devoured the world. Society has collapsed with all that remains of humans living in scattered colonies. Almost everyone has been infected with the virus and has to do some effort to keep it a secret.

When Aiden finds himself infected and about to be executed, it is Hakon who comes to his rescue. He acts as your first real friend in this tough world, showing you the ropes, connecting you with helpful people, and supporting you on your mission. Hakon becomes a buddy, and it hurts when he tells you he works for the man responsible for all of Aiden’s suffering.

6 Retaliation

In Shadow Of Mordor, we were introduced to the hero Talion, a Gondor ranger who loses his family and his life to the forces of Sauron. He returns in Shadow Of War to attempt to decimate Sauron’s forces with his own army using the power of Celebrimdor.

Since he is the main character, you become familiar with Talion to the point where you encourage him to win and avenge his family. You want to use his skills and new powers in order to defeat the ultimate evil that feels within reach. Unfortunately, his desire for power and revenge becomes so strong that he succumbs to the lure of a ring of power becoming a new Ringwraith.

5 Joan

Telltale Games brought legions of people to tears with their version of The Walking Dead. It was the first season where we were introduced to Clémentine, an innocent little girl from the other side of the world. She becomes the leader in season two as she uses what she has learned to continue surviving and carefully interacts with the people around her.

Although she meets many, she develops a relationship with Jane, a young woman and fellow survivor. As they talk and spend more time together, they begin to behave like siblings, with Jane becoming something of an older sister to Clementine. It’s not until the final season that Jane’s true colors are revealed as a deceptive psychopath and Clementine’s confidence is destroyed.

4 Mustache Girl

The 3D platformer genre is alive and well thanks to the efforts of titles like A Hat In Time. As the hero is only known as the Hat Kid, you’ll explore a bunch of colorfully themed worlds while collecting all that glitters. You will also meet a group of dynamic characters who will help you, ask for help or stand in your way. The first you will meet is an energetic adventurer called Mustache Girl.

She immediately befriends Hat Kid before taking them around the first world, showing them how to get around, and helping them defeat their enemies. However, his realization of the collectibles from Hat Kid’s time leads him to want to use them to destroy all the bad guys and the world they live in. The Hat Kid refuses, so the Mustache Girl takes matters into her own hands, cursing their former friend. , and become the real villain.

3 Solutions

Owlboy is a modern take on retro pixel platformers with more freedom of movement, serious stakes, and an interesting way to fight back. While you’ll encounter several companions on your quest who will lend you their gunslinging skills, there’s also a lot of significance in the supporting cast. While Otis isn’t his school’s most accomplished student, there’s another one who gets drenched on Solus even more named.

He is very shy, quiet and gets bullied for his cowardice. Because of this, you develop sympathy for him and feel bad that you can’t do anything to help him. He acts as a foil for Otis, but completely catches everyone off guard when he works his way into the big bad guy’s favor to gather all the powerful artifacts for himself. This comes to a climax when the former classmates must fight for the fate of their world.

2 Six

If there’s a perfect blend of scary and cute, it’s found in Little Nightmares. This 3D puzzle-platformer follows a little girl in a yellow raincoat named Six as she tries to escape from a horrible place called the Maw. During the trip, she will meet hungry and twisted adults trying to do untold things to her.

All she has is her mind and determination to get through this, and you want to make sure she will. Unfortunately, she does not come out unscathed and begins to change. She periodically suffers from the feeling of hunger which culminates in killing and eating a friendly creature called Nome. Finally, after defeating the villain, Six viciously tears herself through his neck and takes his dark power for herself, allowing her to consume the life forces of other beings.

1 Brad

There are a lot of dark and unnerving things about the RPG LISA: The Painful and you’ll come across a lot of them. They will take the form of the strange characters you encounter as well as grotesque mutants deformed by a mysterious drug. The story follows Brad, a tragic badass who survived an event that wiped out all women.

When he finds a little girl, he names her Buddy and dedicates his life to raising and protecting her. When kidnapped as a teenager, Brad goes on a rampage through the devastated world, killing anyone and destroying anything that gets in his way. Although you start on his side, Brad gives in to rage and only cares about what he wants while completely unaware of how his behavior has affected Buddy and what she wants.
